Training for social workers in dealing with people at risk of addiction is a new initiative of the STOCK Foundation in cooperation with the Support Centre Complex. Their social workers help dozens of people every day and come across cases that require good recognition, empathy and professional preparation. During the trainings participants get to know the mechanisms of addiction development and gain knowledge of the available forms of assistance.

Twenty-five people took part in first trainings, led by our experienced psychologists Ms Anna Kalbus and Mr Jerzy Brożyna. The training sessions consisted of mini-lectures, psycho-education and a workshop part – group work and various types of exercises. Participants learnt how to deal with addicts, how the family system functions when there is addiction and learnt strategies and techniques for helping the family with addiction.

The training enabled them to acquire competences for better coping with difficult situations and to learn about their resources and limitations in different spheres. The workshop character encouraged active participation in discussions and exercises. Participants now have a better understanding of the problem of addiction, to structure the knowledge and experiences they had acquired, and to distinguish harmful behavior from effective one in the process of helping families with addiction.
